The SEF 44 Family Protection Endorsement is optional coverage that may be part of your automobile insurance policy. It provides you with extra protection in case you are injured by another motorist who does not have enough insurance coverage to pay your injury claim.
How does SEF 44 Work?
For example, if you had a $1 000 000 claim, the other driver’s insurance would pay to the maximum of its policy (let’s say $750 000) and then you would make a claim against your own insurance, under the SEF 44 Endorsement, for payment of any compensation above the $750 000. SEF 44 Endorsements typically pay up to a maximum of $1 000 000, so in the above example your policy would pay an additional $250 000 beyond the $750 000 available though the other driver’s insurance policy.
Example:
- Other driver’s insurance: $750 000
- SEF 44 payment from your policy: $250 000
- Your total claim amount: $1 000 000
